IN VITRO ANTICANCER AND CYTOTOXIC ACTIVITY OF EXTRACTS OF GYMNACRANTHERA FARQUHARIANA (HOOK.F. and THOMSON) WARB.- AN ENDEMIC PLANT ON CANCER CELL LINES
Main Article Content
Abstract
Cancer is a global burden and the second leading cause of death worldwide. In many types of cancers, Lung and Breast cancer are the most common cause of cancer death. Among natural products plants have played a key role in treating cancer. Chemotherapy is the main treatment modality for certain types of cancer. It is important to monitor and ensure that these chemotherapeutic drugs are potent and effective prior to patient administration. The objective of the study is to evaluate the cytotoxicity and anticancer potency of methanolic and chloroform extracts of leaf and bark of Gymnacranthera farquhariana using MCF 7, A549 and HEK 293 human cancer cell lines in an in vitro cell-based assay. This study demonstrated that the selected plant extract had similar efficacy compared with the cisplatin. The results of the present findings showed the potential of G. Farquhariana bark as a source for the discovery of novel anticancer agent compared with leaf extract. The extracts showed comparable results as shown both in vitro MTT assay and statistical analysis. In vitro cell-based assay promises to be a useful, reliable and rapid method for demonstrating chemotherapeutic drug activity.
